NTUA in a strong European University Alliance

06/07/2023

As of 3 July 2023, the National Technical University of Athens is officially a member of a European University Alliance: The Alliance EULiST “European Universities linking Society and Technology” has succeeded in the recent European Commission’s call to develop new European Universities. EC has awarded the Alliance funds amounting to 14,3 million euros for four years. This great success strengthens the outreach and internationalization strategy of NTUA within a strong transnational Alliance in the European Higher Education Area.

Coordinator of EULiST is Leibniz University Hannover (DE), and members along with NTUA are the Universities: Technical University of Vienna (AT), Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT (FI), Jönköping University (SE), Institut Mines-Télécom (FR), Brno University of Technology (CZ), Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (SK), University Rey Juan Carlos (ES), University L’Aquila (IT).

EULiST activities reflect the complementarity and the multiculturalism of its members, activating long-standing cooperations and developing new and deep ones, covering the wider regions of Northern, Western, Central and Southern Europe, towards a European University Community without borders, combined with outreach and the active engagement of social partners and stakeholders.

The committed and enthusiastic cooperation among the EULiST Members was once again highlighted during the annual EULiST General Assembly, which was successfully hosted by NTUA, 25-27 June 2023, and held at the Zografou Campus. Sixty-five representatives from all ten universities participated in the EULiST General Assembly, including the Rectors and Vice Rectors, Professors, administrative staff, and students. Within the framework of the General Assembly, NTUA organized the first EULiST Blended Intensive Program, with the title “Monitoring Clean Energy in the EULiST campuses”, in which twenty students from the EULiST Universities participated.

In the concluding remarks of the General Assembly, emphasis was given on the need for integration of EULiST in the daily activities of each Member University, on the students’ engagement within all EULiST activities, on the inclusion of sustainable development in everyday life, and on the communication, as well as innovation and technology transfer to social partners through education and research. Among the first planned activities are the development of challenge-based learning, new internship opportunities, joint research proposals in the focus areas of the Alliance, and the mapping of the social partners, with priority in the Municipalities and Regions of the EULiST Universities.

The success of the EULiST Alliance proposal, being awarded EC funds, justifies NTUA’s top-level leadership vision. It also justifies the strong effort of a large NTUA team – of more than 50 members from all NTUA Schools, the relevant administrative authorities, and students – under the coordination of Prof. Katerina Adam (School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering). In the central core of the team participated Prof. Sotiris Karellas (School of Mechanical Engineering), Prof. Efi Dimopoulou (School of Rural, Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering), Assoc. Prof. Ioanna Roussaki (School of Electrical and Computer Engineering), Antonia Lampropoulou (International Relations Department), Katerina Makrinou (Rector’s Office) and Yiannis Tzigounakis (School of Chemical Engineering).

The path now opening represents a great challenge and opportunity for NTUA, as well as for its partners within the EULiST Alliance. I would like to thank everyone who has participated in the EULiST effort so far, which I hope will be embraced by the whole university community, and more especially by our current and future students.

Professor Andreas G. Boudouvis
NTUA Rector

EULiST General Assembly in Athens

01/07/2023

The annual 2023 EULiST General Assembly was successfully hosted by the National Technical University of Athens between 25th-27th June 2023 in Athens. The committed and enthusiastic cooperation among the EULiST Members was evidenced by the sixty-five representatives from all ten universities who participated in the EULiST General Assembly, including the Rectors and Vice Rectors, Professors, Administrative Staff, and Students.

During the first working day, the General Assembly included meetings of the Coordination Office, the Student Board, the Management Board and the Governing Board. In particular, in the Governing Board participated Prof. Volker Epping (LUH President), Prof. Andreas Boudouvis (NTUA Rector), Prof. Juha-Matti Saksa (LUT Rector), Prof. Agneta Marell (JU President), Frédérique Vincent (IMT Vice-President), Prof. Ladislav Janíček (BUT Rector), Prof. Oliver Moravčík (STU Rector), Prof. Jens Schneider (TUW designated Rector), Prof. Javier Ramos López (URJC Rector), Prof. Maria Benedetta Mattei (UNIVAQ Vice-Rector).

An Open session with the title “EULiST towards linking Society and Technology” was held on Monday June 26th afternoon, also livestreaming, where the EULiST strategy was presented, combined with focus presentations on the sustainable campus and the transfer of innovation in education and research. Τhe key-note speech on the European Universities Initiative was presented by Mr Jacques Comby, advisor at the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. The EULiST Blended Intensive Program “Monitoring clean energy in the EULiST Universities”, organised by NTUA in the framework of the General Assembly in cooperation with six EULiST Universities, was enthusiastically presented by its students.

During the second working day, within the General Assembly, the critical role of students in strengthening the societal engagement across the universities of the Alliance was highlighted. The need for integration of EULiST in the academic activity of each partner University was emphasized. In addition, it was pointed that while EULiST has been designed and organised in a bottom-up approach, the activities planned for the next funded steps, now reflect the overall strategy, and common procedures, platforms and recognition developed among the ten universities.

The General Assembly was held at Zografou Campus, and it included separate hybrid meetings of WPs, a fascinating cultural Sunday walk in the historic center of Athens, two lively social dinners and an engaging visit to selected NTUA laboratories and the central Library.
