EULiST at Researchers’ Night NTUA

10/10/2022

The National Technical University of Athens opened its gates at the emblematic Averof building at the Patission historic complex on Friday September 30th, 2022, from 5 o’clock in the afternoon until 10 o’clock in the evening to hold Researchers’ Night.  The aim of this pan european event is to re-invent the connection between Academia and Society, and re-introduce to the research world thousands of people, the citizens of Athens and members of all the communities of the Universities and the Research Centers of the Attica region.

The EULiST NTUA team – comprised by professors and students from a number of NTUA Schools – participated in the heart of the fascinating event at the central atrium of the Averof building, and attracted a great number of young researchers and students who were informed for the EULiST vision and its activities to the present.

In particular, flyers were disseminated at the EULiST corner that stood out with a central roll up banner, and three videos were continuously shown, regarding (i) EULiST Universities general info (ii) the EULiST 3D Virtual Sustainable Campus workshop and (iii) the EULiST Summer School in the frame of “You promised me a city” conference.

Activities of this type enhance the dissemination of EULiST vision and mission to the community of our Universities.

EULiST NTUA Info Day

Tuesday, July 5th, 2022

Webinar, 11:00-12:30 EEST

The National Technical University of Athens, within the framework of its policy for internalization and outreach, has become an active partner in the Alliance of nine Higher Education Institutions in the European Union, EULiST “European Universities Linking Society and Technology”.

The scope and strategy of this Alliance will be presented at the members of NTUA Community on Tuesday July 5th, at 11:00-12:30, focusing on the topics: Campus, Teaching and Learning, Research and Innovation, Outreach, Engagement and Transfer.

EULiST serves as an intermediary and generator of knowledge and innovation, empowering responsible change agents to solve the challenges humanity is facing, with a specific focus on climate change and disruption in social cohesion. To this end, EULiST strives to generate a unique and creative academic ecosystem inspired by the reciprocities between society and technology. Embedded in a single borderless campus, through transdisciplinary learning and teaching, cooperative research and innovation, and community outreach, EULiST seeks to make the Knowledge Square a reality and advance open science principles, using a new type of unified, integrated digital library as its knowledge and communications hub.

The nine Universities which have already joined forces towards the achievement of this vision are: National Technical University of Athens (Greece), Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), Technical University of Vienna (Austria), Jönköping University (Sweden), Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT (Finland), University Rey Juan Carlos  (Spain), University L’Aquila (Italy), Slovak University of Technology Bratislava (Slovakia) and Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic).

Showcasing the EULiST Virtual Sustainable Campus

08/04/2022

A student online workshop “Showcasing the EUST Virtual Sustainable Campus”, was organized by EUST WG Campus, and successfully conducted on June 11th, 2021. Undergraduate and postgraduate Theses from the National Technical University of Athens (GR), the Leibniz University Hannover (DE), the BRNO University of Technology (CZ) and the University Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid (ES) were presented. This was followed by smaller group discussion divided into 4 topics: “Wish list for the virtual campus”, “What is a sustainable campus”, “Common thread” and “Digital infrastructure coordination”, as a first step in growing the collaboration among the EUST Universities.

A second workshop on: “EULiST Campuses as a microcosm modelling the transition to sustainable solutions” projects was organized by NTUA on April 8, 2022, to increase interdisciplinary collaborations and networking among the EULiST partners. Short and long-term activities, exchange of information about the status of the projects and improved ways of collaboration and methodologies, particularly considering the Higher Education Impact Ranking, were presented.

The overall conclusions can be summarized as follows: i. Explore what can be improved on the campuses, considering best practices and knowledge and ii. Launch a “common digital campus” independently administered but sharing computing and e-learning centers, digital libraries, (digital and physical) common space areas, projects’ outcomes.

EULiST Research Fridays

22/10/2021

WG research has successfully initiated a series of workshops, EULiST Research Fridays in fall 2021. These workshops aim at the preparation of new Horizon Europe funded joint projects on energy-related topics including research fields with specific interest for the EULIST partner universities.

The first EULiST Research Friday was conducted on Friday October 22nd 2021, hosted by NTUA, on the specific subjects of Bioenergy and Air quality, and comprised of two Topics:

  • Topic A focused on “efficient and low-emission technologies for industrial use of combustion and gasification systems from low-value biogenic residues and wastes
  • Topic B focused on “preventing smog episodes in Europe: Air quality impact of engine-emitted volatile, semi volatile and secondary particles”.

The aim of the respective Research and Innovation actions through EU funding was to establish new knowledge and/or to explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution.

The actions may include basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment. The actions may also contain closely connected but limited demonstration or pilot activities aiming to show technical feasibility in a near to operational environment.

The workshop consisted of short presentations by each partner on the specific subject and discussions, while the summary of the outcomes and future steps were presented. 32 representatives (16 on Session A and 14 on Session B) from NTUA, STU, BUT, LUH, LUT, URJC and TUW, participated in the first EULiST Research Friday.

The intention of the Alliance is to hold a EULiST Research Friday on a monthly basis in the coming years.

EULiST Distance Learning Workshop

10/06/2021

A European Workshop in Distance Learning, EULiST DL workshop “What is the New Normal in Distance Learning in European Universities”, was organized by EULiST WG Studying and Teaching, and successfully conducted on June 10th 2021.

It was proposed by NTUA Rector and decided by Presidents Board and thus hosted by NTUA. 26 leading academic educators, IT experts and students from the EULiST partners discussed on Distance Learning as a new learning modality from social, technical and pedagogical perspectives. Success stories and lessons learnt in the COVID-19 era were shared to recognize opportunities and challenges for universities and work towards sustainable solutions for the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Within the plenary session – including the key note speech “A strategic view on the future of higher education online learning” – three parallel panel discussions and the concluding session with next steps proposed, diverse viewpoints were discussed, both from STEM and SSH disciplines, regarding the enhancement of distance learning to achieve the best learning outcomes.

DL Workshop was live streamed and more than 330 attendees actively took part, while registrations reached 700. The majority of the participants were from the EULiST countries GR, CZ, SK, DE, FI, SE, ES, IT, AT. Participation was also noted from the UK, IN, TR, FR and PL. 150 participants actively shared their opinions and experiences in live polling during the workshop and 60 questions were addressed to the speakers and panelists.

This comprehensive array of material was recorded and edited into one unified video of 4 hours and 50 min, available on the website of the workshop http://dlworkshop.ntua.gr/

For the dissemination of the key points discussed and conclusions reached regarding next steps in distance Learning in EULIST, a short summary video of 10 min was also prepared, available in https://youtu.be/g9N_3U0Niqo, whereas the comprehensive array of material presented is available at the workshop’s website.

The opinions and views shared during the workshop have provided valuable material to be taken into account in designing future Education Strategies for EULiST Alliance. A second DL Workshop will be organized, focusing on “next steps” and the “future of DL”.
